Our Mission
Through supervised and structured sports activities, we provide student athletes the opportunity to learn teamwork and leadership, which enables them to become responsible, good citizens and community role models. In the context of sports, we also emphasize the importance of education, and we encourage excellence in all endeavors.
Our History
In January 2002, three men formalized a youth-oriented sports and education concept and incorporated a not-for-profit organization, which they named, Leadership Through Athletics. Into the LTA fold, they brought the Maryland Sure Shots. Previously, the Sure Shots were a group of loosely connected basketball teams, both boys and girls. Initially, the basketball organization was formed as a boy's team in order to compete with other Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) clubs. That was 1997. The first girl's team was added a year later. Today, there are 23 teams competing in their various age groups, some of them staying together throughout the year.
Our Membership
Coaches are required members of the Maryland Sure Shots. Likewise, parents and interested community supporters can be voting members of the organization. Membership dues are $20 annually. Voting privileges are granted to members in good standing who have attended most meetings (see Club Constitution).
Our Need
Like most amateur sports organizations, the Maryland Sure Shots operate strictly with volunteers. No one is paid. We are constantly on the look out for skilled adults with the ability to teach and mentor young student athletes as well as coach them in games. It takes a special person with patience and perseverance to do the thankless multitude of tasks just so the kids can play a game they love. If you are that person, and you’re willing to undergo scrutiny as a private individual whose background we must check, and then as a coach, then we need to talk.
Coaches, team parents and business managers are critically important people to the success of our organization. Without them, there is no team. No teaching. No mentoring. No enrollment in leagues, clinics, camps and tournaments. And no opportunity for student athletes to grow through participation in team sports.
People are the resource in greatest demand. But if you don’t have time or the training, then every team can use financial assistance. Success regionally warrants trips to national tournaments. On average, teams traveling to these destinations need upwards of $10,000 per trip. So expenses sometimes make it impossible to attend such events even after teams have earned the privilege.
