No coach in the Maryland Sure Shots organization is paid. All are volunteers, who make many personal sacrifices to help youngsters learn, play and enjoy the game of basketball. The organization is just as concerned about the character of a prospective coach as it is about the person's ability to design effective offensive plays or prepare a successful conditioning program. Coaches often become surrogates of parents. They are expected to set a good example; be a role model of behaviors, values and life priorities.
Our team coaches are entrusted with the safety of players when traveling as a team. They are entrusted to supervise behavior, eating habits, proper amounts of sleep and other parental tasks. What do you know about your coach? How long has coach lived in your community? Where does your coach work? What kind of job does he/she have? Don't be afraid to ask.
Most of our Sure Shot coaches have worked with their present team for three or more years. They are as familiar as an aunt or uncle. They become important social acquaintances. Our relationships between players and coaches set the Maryland Sure Shots apart from most sports organizations. Even if it fails to produce a basketball dynasty, it still creates a strong bond between the organization and the communities we serve.
Despite this higher mission, the Sure Shots attract coaches with lots of experience; coaches who have already established credentials and winning ways. Some at middle schools and high schools. Some at colleges. Because of our quality coaches, the organization excels in league and tournament play, finishing among the elite teams in Maryland. Sure Shot teams are frequently invited to showcase events and earn invitations to national tournaments through their successful regional and statewide endeavors.
